A local FFA chapter recently was selected to compete for national recognition in a career development event at October's 85th National FFA Convention.
The Labette County FFA Chapter from Altamont, Kan., will send members to Indianapolis as they vie for national honors in the area of Agricultural Sales. National support for the Agricultural Sales CDE is provided by Monsanto. FFA members who will represent the chapter in the contest include Taylore Kusel, Rhianne Taylor, Holleigh Sorrell, Halli Wigger. The chapter advisor is Dustin Wiley.
Agricultural Sales is one of 24 career development event areas, covering job skills in everything from communications to mechanics. Participants collaborate as a team to develop a pre-call plan for a variety of different customer types. Individual team members then utilize their skills in information gathering to sell a pre-selected product to one of the customer types. Members also have their knowledge of sales principles tested in the written exam. CDEs help students develop the abilities to think critically, communicate clearly, and perform effectively in a competitive job market.
"Through this event, students are able to prepare for career opportunities by participating in a wide range of sales activities that develop their interpersonal skills," says Melissa Dunkel, CDE education specialist.
The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 540,739 student members—all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture—as part of 7,489 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The National FFA Organization changed to its present name in 1988, in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and agricultural education. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
