The University of Missouri Extension Commercial Agriculture program will hold its 14th annual Beef Tour on August 28. The tour will include producers in Bollinger and Cape Girardeau counties.
The common thread of this year’s tour stops is genetic excellence. All of the 2010 Beef Tour producers market Show-Me-Select-qualified heifers and purchase steer calves that are age- and source-verified.
The tour begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Kasten Beef Alliance in Bollinger County. Featured speakers at the stop include Craig Payne, MU Extension veterinarian, who will discuss trichomoniasis prevention and management.
Stop Two is in Cape Girardeau County at Eggers Stock Farm. Robert Weaber, MU Extension beef geneticist, will speak on genetic defects and opportunities to overcome them.Richard Eggers will give an overview of his operation and talk about the development of his freezer beef business.
Stop Three will be at Masters Farm, a Missouri Century Farm. Vern Pierce, MU Extension agricultural economist, will discuss urban encroachment and considerations for getting along with neighbors. MU Extension regional livestock specialist Roger Eakins will talk about the Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program.
The final stop will visit Rick Aufdenberg’s farm. Gerry Shinn, who operates a feed business in southeast Missouri, will talk about marketing cattle through U.S .Premium Beef. Justin Sexten, MU Extension beef nutritionist, will speak on supplement programs for backgrounding and finishing cattle.
At 6 p.m. there will be a free beef dinner at the Aufdenberg farm courtesy of the SEMO Cattlemen’s Association.
